Business Review Singapore

We conducted a business review for a machine shop of a mining company in Singapore this week. As I was busy my Chinese partner flew down from Shanghai and conducted the review for me and we reviewed the analysis over night between day one and day two using Skype and a desktop sharing called Mikogo.

Again a very interesting situation, I had been in Singapore in October and met the VP of this company, in a hotel at the end of Orchard Road, on Sunday evening to discuss the possibility of helping him to improve some aspects of the machine shops operation. I had worked with this VP before when he was a sales director of a Scottish machine Shop working mostly for the oil industry. He had changed a lot in the intervening ten years. He had had three more high power roles and was now in a new role with significant opportunity to improve performance and to expand the business through acquisition. He wanted us to help the machines shop change its mind set and to improve on time performance in the production and delivery of highly complex components for the mining and oil industry.

The review conducted on day one had revealed a number of UdE and obstacles to overcome. The plant was obviously a production environment but had many of the characteristics of a project business. My chinese partner was inclined to say recommend using the TOC Critical Chain improvement process as the way to make the changes and improvements needed.

The other aspect of interest in this situation was coaching my partner in his analysis of a business though only hearing the details o the problem as relayed in email and directly across the internet. Developing clouds and refining these to be the clouds of the customer and not just the underlying generic clouds of the TOC solution. After two or so hours my partner was ready to prepare for day two and we agreed to talk again via Skype maybe n Sunday or early the following week to complete the analysis and to finalise the recommendation. We agreed a schedule that would mean me being up at 3 am or 4 am in order to meet the time difference for China.
